Caricatures: perception is in the eyes of the beholder

Simon Fawkes CaricatureHow do others really see you? This question can be applied to a company as well as a person, but the analogy is easier to apply to an individual.

We all have many different roles in business and private life and some of these roles overlap.

I hope that by now the sketch will have caught your attention and possibly raised your curiosity. Let me explain.

Montmartre is one of my favourite parts of Paris and many of the street artists gather in one square. They fall into several categories of style. This time it was the caricatures that caught my attention. The art of the caricature is to portray someone in a humorous and memorable way that normally involves exaggerating some of the features. The more outrageous ones can be the most successful, but there is always the risk of going too far. Most politicians crave publicity and are willing to accept a degree of ridicule as the price of fame.

So consider your various roles and how you would like to be perceived. You then need to get some honest feedback. The title of this post combines two familiar phrases: “perception is reality” and “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”.

In business it is important to stand out in way that is relevant and credible. Aim to be different rather than just better.
